Dental veneer is a wafer-thin layer of custom-made shells, having the color of teeth, intended to cover the surface of the tooth to make it look great and improve the general appearance of the face.

If you have chipped, broken, cracked, or discolored teeth, your Renton dentist may recommend a cosmetic or restorative dentistry procedure utilizing dental veneers. Dental veneers, or porcelain veneers, are very thin shells of porcelain that are affixed to the front of your teeth to cover up damage and discoloration. Porcelain veneers are very natural looking, durable, and comfortable.

What Are Dental Veneers?

Dental Veneers Treatment

Unlike a Crown which can require significant removal of a tooth’s structure, a dental veneer is a more conservative dental procedure which requires minimal preparation on the tooth. Porcelain laminate veneers are amongst some of the most aesthetic means to create your perfect smile. They are typically made from individually hand crafted pieces of porcelain that are as thin as a contact lens and are used to replace the enamel on the tooth. They can be applied on one, or all of your teeth and are often used to brighten a tooth or full smile that has become discoloured, or to remedy a tooth or teeth that have been damaged by an accident or decay.

The dental veneer procedure takes at least three trips to your dentist, from an initial consultation, diagnosis and treatment planning, to preparation and finally bonding. Your dentist will create a mock-up of your smile and create temporary veneers which are you can use whilst the permanent veneers are being fitted. This time can also be used to help you evaluate and make any changes you require before the final fit. Once your permanent veneers are created they will be fitted to your teeth and replace the temporary ones.

Cosmetic Dentist Consultation

Before you can schedule an appointment to receive porcelain veneers, you will have to meet with a dentist or cosmetic dentist to determine if you’re a good candidate for veneers. If you are in good overall health and good oral health, you should have no problem undergoing the dental veneer procedure. Your dentist will do an oral examination and take dental X-rays to determine if porcelain veneers are the most effective form of restorative dentistry for you.

The Porcelain Dental Veneer Procedure

The veneer procedure has several steps in achieving a great smile. First, diagnosis and treatment planning will happen through an appointed consultation. You will want to take an active role in the planning your smile design. Through this consultation, your doctor can utilize photographs, study models, and wax-up presentations to review the plan and the upcoming results of this procedure. During the review, you are welcome to ask any questions and to discuss treatment in your smile plan.

The second step is an appointment where the teeth will be prepared for the dental veneers procedure. The teeth are lightly buffed and approximately one half of a millimeter of each tooth involved is removed. Sometimes anesthesia is not even needed. A mold is taken of your teeth and then sent to a professional dental lab for fabrication of your porcelain veneers.

At your last appointment, your doctor will first place the dental veneers on your teeth with water or glycerin to check the fit and color. After the color is determined, and the veneer is ready to be applied, the teeth involved are cleansed with specific chemicals to achieve a bond. Special cement is placed between the teeth and the veneer and a visible light beam is used to harden the cement. Depending on the number of teeth that are receiving the veneer procedure, each of the appointments will take from one to two hours of time for your doctor to produce a wonderful, pleasing result for you.

Veneer Cost

In general, all kinds of cosmetic procedures cost a lot and the price varies from place to place. It is the same with veneers. The cost of the veneers will also vary depending upon the dental veneers used, whether it is a standard fit or tailor-made for your teeth. However, for veneers, the cost of treatment depends a lot on the experience and skill set of the cosmetic dentist, the type of material that you will choose for your veneers and finally, the amount of work you will be having done. There are mainly two materials used for making veneers- porcelain and composite. Porcelain lasts for a long time and provides us with a more natural look, but it is slightly expensive with the cost ranging from 500-800 pounds.
